German Chamomile is an annual native of Europe and Western Asia. It has a branched, erect and smooth stem, which grows to a height of 15–60 cm, with very hairy leaves and tubular yellow flowers, surrounded by white ray florets. The hollow receptacle is swollen and lacks scales. This property distinguishes German chamomile from other chamomiles.
Chamomile blue refers to chamazulene, the purified, deep-blue essential oil derived using steam distillation, rather than the plant itself.
A study published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine in 2013 found that chamomile-based aromatherapy may help improve sleep in people receiving treatment for heart disease.
